The Brook Hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky hosted the National
Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team during the Labor Day
Weekend. It was a weekend long fundraising event that was
also co-sponsored with Louisville Slugger and The Louisville Bats
(Triple-A minor league baseball affiliate of the Cincinnati
Reds). On September 1st, a team representing The Brook
Hospitals, which was made up of employees and local celebrities,
had the opportunity to participate in a softball game against the
WWAST. Aside from poor weather, due to Tropical Storm
Isaac, the game was a huge success and fun for all that watched or
participated. In the end, The Brook Hospitals couldn’t keep
up with the homerun onslaught of The WWAS, which totaled 20.
On Sunday, the WWAST participated in a game against representatives
of the local VA Medical Center and then on Monday they took on the
Louisville Sports All-Stars at Slugger Field prior to the
Louisville Bats last home game of the year.
The Brook Hospitals were honored and privileged to meet such
courageous and inspiring individuals. They are dedicated to
their vision to support and honor our soldiers and veterans
sacrifices, and to show other amputees and everyone who sees or
hears about them that “life without a limb is limitless”.
“We were able to raise $8,000 for WWAST” according to Jerry
Lucas, Community Relations Liaison for The Brook Hospital Dupont’s
military program and coordinator of the event. “It was such a
great experience to meet and spend time with each of them. We
look forward to having them back in 2014.”
